What I brought today is scallion pancakes with a soy garlic dipping sauce and it really reminds me of my mom. In our household, my dad is actually the one who cooks. My mom doesn’t really do it, but the only two things that she does do are scallion pancakes and dumplings. Those are the things that my dad does not touch. It really reminds me of home because this was pretty much my afternoon snack growing up. My parents are from Taiwan and I grew up in Wisconsin, which isn’t the most diverse place. So unfortunately growing up going to school you learn very quickly that the things I loved to eat at home aren’t the things you bring to school to eat if you want to fit in. So for me it was all about becoming Americanized, really like pushing boundaries with my parents, especially with my mom and I don’t think she really understood it, but she was so accepting of all the limits and boundaries that I pushed. Now that I’m older I really appreciate. For me and for her, most days after school this was the snack she would make after school and I think it was her reminder for me that you can be who you want to be at school, but when you come home this is a reminder of home, not just where we are, but also of where we are from. And I think now that I am older, whenever I go home, this is like our thing. We always make it, we have our couple hours in the kitchen together so it is something that I really appreciate and I really love her for it.
