Ami
I grew up in Mumbai. The dish I brought today is inspired by my mom. It’s called Kheer which is a rice pudding. This is a quintessential dish made in many households all over India and there are different versions of it whether you go north, south, east, west. My mom is from the state Gujarat and this is how she would make it. This has milk, rice, condensed milk, cardamom, some nutmeg and the smell is incredible. She would make it on any great occasion. It’s a sign for anything very auspicious happening. This texture takes me back home. I remember many Sundays waking up late in the morning and every time she made this at home the fragrance would fill the house, but the first thing she would do is offer some in her temple where she would light candles and put flowers. I feel like every time I eat this I can smell all of those things and I can hear her little bell tinkling while she says her prayers. My mom is so many things to me. While this is comfort to me it is also a place of strength because my mom has been my friend and she has also been my dad. She was a homemaker, and when my dad passed away she became an entrepreneur and she now has an incredible business and she brought 3 kids up who are doing really well. It’s comforting, but so many things about this are like my mom because she thinks you can be a homemaker as well as chase your dreams. I think she imparts that to me and my sister when we had kids - to never give up on your dreams and fight it out and you can do whatever you want. I hope you enjoy it. It’s sweet.
