Chanel

This dish was created by Chanel, who was inspired by both her grandmother and her best friend. “The story really starts with the pot I used…this pot reminds me of the first strong woman I encountered in my life, my grandmother. She emigrated to the U.S. from Haiti. She was the person who taught me how to cook. This kind of wide steel pot was really common in our kitchen, and as I encounter more Caribbean people’s kitchens I see it’s a common pot used for stews and rice and beans - all types of hearty meals that are filled with love and made in big portions to share.” Chanel also used this dish to welcome her best friend into her home. Together they bond over this dish, their cultural heritages and their journey as artists and women of color.
